How it All Began

Growing up in Graham, North Carolina, barbecue was always part of my life and a great way to connect with family. I have so many memories of people smiling and eating my dad’s family BBQ recipe. Even though sometimes he would burn our meals, we still ate everything, and the food would be incredible with enough of his signature sauce. Eventually, he passed the recipe down to me. When I got the sauce recipe, I went to work perfecting it and doing anything I could to make it even better. Throughout the whole process, people would constantly beg me to sell it after getting a taste. But it wasn’t ready yet. Then, after a few years, I got it right!

I started really taking my sauce seriously after I went to Tree House Recovery. There, people from across the country told me they loved it, and I watched the immediate smiles on their faces along with a morale boost during a rough time. I learned that we all have another opportunity to do good, feel good, and have the best chance we all deserve. This is how we came up with the name Best Chance BBQ! We proudly support Tree House Recovery and donate 10% of our profits to help others pursue the same journey to a new life.

best chance bbq and it's connection with tree house recovery.

Best Chance BBQ has a deep connection with Tree House Recovery. In fact, if it weren’t for Tree House Recovery, Best Chance BBQ wouldn’t exist. In a sense, it all started at Tree House’s IOP house in Portland, Oregon, when our owner, Chance Kerns attended and graduated from Tree House PDX.

Chance Kern's story (Owner of Best Chance BBQ)
Before I got to Tree House Recovery (THR), I wasn’t Chance anymore. I had lost him long before then. I was miserable every second of every day and honestly didn’t want to be here on Earth anymore. I was in constant pain, physically and mentally. No one could understand me, and some days I couldn’t walk or talk, even when I wasn’t on drugs or alcohol. This was a result of eleven surgeries, neurological damage from concussions, and psychological issues from my past. I was in and out of jail for selling drugs and didn’t care whether I lived or died. I pushed everyone away because if they got to know me, they would see how much pain I was in. One day, events lead to my family and me almost being killed and arrested. The next day, I decided to do something.

I went to a rehab in Wilmington, NC where I met a representative for THR named Brent. He shared his story and spoke about what THR does and why it is different than other places. I immediately thought, “That place would be perfect for me, but it’s only for rich people and I don’t have the money to go.” Brent told me that’s not how it works, and two months later I was flying to Oregon. THR helped me and made sure I got there, even though my family didn’t have much money. And now, I’m giving back by donating some of my Best Chance BBQ profits to THR.

THR taught me how to love myself, which had always been a foreign concept for me. They teach you more than how to be sober; they teach you how to live and how to deal with life as it comes. Since leaving THR five months ago, I’ve had four surgeries. Due to what I learned from THR, I made it through them in a healthy manner. The people you meet at THR aren’t just a team, but a family you can always lean on. I am forever grateful to THR for teaching me how to live and most importantly, who I am.
